Encouraging Age-Appropriate Worship Practices for Young Children
During Advent, you will notice that our brightly colored activity bags in the Narthex have been replaced by 12 new blue bags. These are our new Worship Bags. In them you will find activities designed to help young children interact with worship and not just keep them busy. We encourage adults attending with young children to explore what they have to offer.
Advent and Christmas Worship Bags include:
- Make your own Advent Wreath: light the right number of candles for each Sunday in Advent
- Practice waiting for the Messiah: use timers to see how long you can wait, or quietly watch the sand race each other
- Wait for the Word: Wait to hear special words during worship and count how many you hear. Also count the BLUE things in worship
- If you can’t wait, play Christmas Eve with puppets
These activities are intended to engage young ones in “Holy (not necessarily quiet) Play” in hopes that they will find worship to be not only a place they are welcomed, but a place where they can encounter the God who loves them in their own way.

The Education Team would love to hear your feedback and suggestions on how to build upon this effort. We currently are looking for activity ideas for the seasons of Epiphany and Lent.
