Worship on the Go!
We Study the Entire Word of God

July 23-24, 2016

Welcome to Worship on the Go!

It is Summer and we at Good Shepherd Luther Church know that this means many of our community may be traveling. But just because you are traveling doesn’t mean you can’t worship with us. Wherever you are and whenever you can find the time, we encourage you to take 15 min to worship God and speak the good news of God’s gracious love into the world.

Things you will need: Water, this Bulletin (digital or paper), optional candle (real or app).

Following the practice of good order, if there is more than one worshiper, divide the parts of the service up amongst those gathered. Use the bulletin as a resource and follow the worship order below. Songs of your choice can be added as the Spirit moves you.

After you are done take a selfie and tell us where you worshiped and any other news you’d like to share about your worship by posting it to Facebook. You can either post it to the GSC Facebook site or tag GSC by writing in your post “@Good Shepherd Lutheran Church”

Thanksgiving for Baptism    ELW p. 97

With the water get wet either by dipping your finger in the water or splashing each other.

P    Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth,
    our light and our salvation.

C    Amen.

P    Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

C    We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

P    Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all.

C    We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit,     now and forever. Amen.

Greeting

P    The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C    And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

P    Let us pray,

Holy God, your word feeds your people with life that is eternal. Keep us steadfast in in our study of scripture. Nurture our growth, that we may live and serve in you, bearing your truth and love to all generations. Grant this through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C
Amen.

WORD God speaks to us in scriptures read, sung and preached.

First Reading     Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the ordinances—that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, so that you and your children and your children’s children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Psalm 1    Read Responsively

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,

    or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;

but their delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law they meditate day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season,

and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.

Second Reading 2 Timothy 3:14-17

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

Gospel     Matthew 4:1-11

A
The Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew, chapter 4.    C
Glory to you, O Lord.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'”

Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Respond to the Word: Questions for Reflection

Read the scripture verses and discuss the 3 questions (this can be brief or not.
Let the Spirit guide you, but don’t feel like you have to force it.)

As you read the lessons for this worship; think about them and talk about what each one tells us about learning and living the word of God. Then read the verse below and discuss the questions.

Nokolai Grundtvig wrote these lyrics to a hymn:

“God’s Word is our great heritage, and shall be ours forever. To spread its light from age to age shall be our chief endeavor. Through life it guides our way, in death it is our stay. Lord grant while time shall last your church may hold it fast throughout all generations.”

It what ways do you think the word of God come to us today?

How do we experience it?

How does it guide our ways?

Do you think generations long ago knew the Bible better than we do?

Is there anything about modern life that changes the way we learn and use the scriptures of the Bible?

How do you think the people of God will preserve the Word of God for future generations?

The Apostles’ Creed    ELW p. 217

P    In the words of the Apostles’ Creed, let us confess our faith:

C
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers of the People of God

Offer your own petitions or use the prayers provided in the download
(the same the will be used at GSC) and close with the Lord’s prayer.

Gathered by the Holy Spirit and fed by the word, we come together as the people of God to pray for the church, the world, and all in need.    (A brief silence)

O God, build up your church throughout the world. Teach it to share the living bread from heaven that you provide so that all are fed. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Send rain and sun in their season so that fields of grain and fields of flowers thrive. Provide clean water for people and animals alike. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Draw leaders away from bitterness and into your ways of kindness and mercy. Replace blame and malice with forgiveness and justice. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Sustain all whose journey feels too hard to bear. Restore the hope of all who despair. Comfort those who are poor, oppressed, persecuted, or homeless. Heal the sick and comfort the grieving (especially).

Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Bless those who prepare the bread and wine for our worship, communion servers, and those who carry from this assembly the bread of life and cup of salvation to those who are sick/homebound/imprisoned.

Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Keep us in communion with our ancestors in the faith until we are raised up on the last day and join them at the table of the Lamb. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Into your loving hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your abundant mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
