Worship on the Go!

Catechism Series: “But Deliver Us From Evil”

August 5-6, 2017

Welcome to Worship on the Go!

It is Summer and we at Good Shepherd Luther Church know that this means many of our community may be traveling. But just because you are traveling doesn’t mean you can’t worship with us. Wherever you are and whenever you can find the time, we encourage you to take 15 min to worship God and speak the good news of God’s gracious love into the world.

Things you will need: Water, this Bulletin (digital or paper), optional candle (real or app).

Following the practice of good order, if there is more than one worshiper, divide the parts of the service up amongst those gathered. Use the bulletin as a resource and follow the worship order below. Songs of your choice can be added as the Spirit moves you.

After you are done take a selfie and tell us where you worshiped and any other news you’d like to share about your worship by posting it to Facebook. You can either post it to the GSC Facebook site or tag GSC by writing in your post “@Good Shepherd Lutheran Church”

Thanksgiving for Baptism    ELW p. 97

With the water get wet either by dipping your finger in the water or splashing each other.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth,

our light and our salvation.

Amen.

Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by

your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your

people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with

the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your

promise and servants of all.

We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of

new life
in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your

forgiveness, grace, and love.
To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now
and forever. Amen.

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

Almighty and ever-living God, you are always more ready to hear than we are to pray, and you gladly give more than we either desire or deserve.

Pour out your abundant mercy and deliver us from evil. Guide us by grace to recognize the evil that desires to capture our being. We pray this through your Son, Jesus Christ, our teacher, Savior, and Lord. Amen.

WORD God speaks to us in scriptures read, sung and preached.

First Reading     1 John 3:7-10

Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. Everyone who commits sin is a child of the devil; for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born of God do not sin, because God’s seed abides in them; they cannot sin, because they have been born of God. The children of God and the children of the devil are revealed in this way: all who do not do what is right are not from God, nor are those who do not love their brothers and sisters.

Word of God, Word of Life.    Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading     Luke 10:1-20

The Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapter 10. Glory to you, O Lord.

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But at the judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades.

“Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

The Gospel of the Lord.    Praise to you, O Christ.

Respond to the Word

  1. Why do you think we don’t talk about the devil much now? What do you think of when you think about the devil?
  1. While we know we need to acknowledge the existence of evil, we also don’t want to dwell on it. Why do you think that is the case? What happens to you when you dwell on evil?
  2. What is the main tool we have to fight the devil? In other words, where do you need to go when you feel the attacks of the devil – temptation, doubt, and fear?

The Apostles’ Creed

With the whole church let us confess our faith in words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

God of abundance who provides fields of wheat and vineyards of grapes, bless farmers and growers who furnish bread and wine for tables of abundance.

Lord, in your mercy.        Hear our prayer.

God of all compassion, raise up just leaders who care for the poor and hungry. Let nations share your bounty across the world and assure that no one goes without food.

Lord, in your mercy.        Hear our prayer.

God who satisfies, bless the feeding programs of this congregation and community. Be with sandwich makers and cookie bakers, with those who stock food pantry shelves and those who point out need whether in our neighborhood or half a world away.

Lord, in your mercy.        Hear our prayer.

Lord’s Prayer

As often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s kingdom until it comes:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth

as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin

against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

SENDING The Holy Spirit sends us out to proclaim the Good News.

Blessing

With hand extended over those gathered, bless each other.

The blessing of the Lord God Almighty, the blessing of Christ, the Lamb who was slain,

and the blessing of the Holy Spirit of truth be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.
